Asheville Go Bragh!

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Forbes has named Asheville, NC the 6th best metro area for business and careers.  Asheville has been the “world headquarters” of Biblio.com since the beginning (2000).  In fact, long under-appreciated North Carolina garnered three of the top ten spots, with Raleigh and Durham included in the list. Definitely one of the most eccentric cities on [...]

Where The Wild Things Are–The Movie

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Yes, it’s true. Maurice Sendak‘s beloved children’s classic, Where the Wild Things Are, has been adapted for the silver screen and is directed by Spike Jonze. Jones and Dave Eggers of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius fame, wrote the screenplay together. The best thing about the film? The “wild things” appear to be live-action, [...]

Free rare book room listings for booksellers

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

The Rare Book Room on Biblio has always been one of my personal favorite features of the site. After years of being surfeited by the piles of “Acceptable” condition books on the internet these days, the Rare Book Room is a place of beauty and tranquility for me. Formerly, Biblio.com Booksellers were charged a one [...]

Used Books Recession Proof?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Chris Volk at Bookfever has put together an interesting, short survey of booksellers and how the recession is affecting them. To summarize: booksellers are reporting average sales 10.6% lower than the prior year. On Biblio, we’re definitely seeing used book sales weaker than we anticipated for booksellers, but the average bookseller’s sales on Biblio are [...]

Graphic Books Finally Join NY Times’ “Bestseller” Lists

Friday, March 13th, 2009

As an avid comic fan, I was pleased to see the announcement of graphic novels to the New York Times Bestseller list this morning. They’ve compiled the lists into three categories: hardcover, softcover and Manga. Catch the lists and then check out available copies of Watchmen by Alan Moore–which stands at #3 in hardcover and [...]

What does Biblio.com do with all the money it makes?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Couldn’t resist the eye-grabbing headline.  At risk of disappointing the reader, I have to confess that we’re really not talking that much money. While we’re profitable (even despite the economy) I’m afraid our bottom line would look like a rounding error to many big companies.  (At least its a black rounding error, though) Its surprising [...]

ReCAPTCHA’s so cool…

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

My afternoon has been spent trying to stop spam in Biblio.com’s forums. Stopping spam is usually a thankless job. Today it was fun. ReCAPTCHA is an interesting take on proving you are human. It displays two words from pages that could not be OCR’d. One word is known and the other is not. Each user [...]
